Stage 10 & 11: From Worms via Trechtingshausen to Rolandswerth
Tired muscles, scenic beauty & the road ahead
June 9–10, 2024
Despite a restful night in a cozy bed, I could clearly feel the strain of the past few days and the challenges of the Swiss mountains in my body. Still, I had to keep going. My original plan for the day was to switch to the right side of the Rhine in Mainz, as the dike path was becoming increasingly monotonous.

Change of plans in Mainz: Staying left
A waiter’s advice leads to a better choice
I took a break in Mainz and recharged. During a chat with a waiter, I learned that flooding on the right side of the Rhine was even worse. That convinced me to stay on the left, continuing through Ludwigshafen toward Bingen—mostly along the dike again.
High water, detours & wet shoes
Flooded paths, small detours & sun-dried socks
There were a few blocked sections and water-covered paths. I managed to get around or through most of them—though my shoes got soaked. Thankfully, the sunshine helped dry them out quickly.

Narrow valley & physical exhaustion
Castles by the river, pain in the saddle
From Bingen, the valley narrowed and the route ran directly along the river. In Trechtingshausen, near Reichenstein Castle, I found a small riverside campsite for the night. The ride had taken its toll: legs, knees, lower back—everything hurt. I would’ve loved two rest days, but time was tight due to delays in the Alps.
A surprisingly strong day with stunning views
New strength & motivation through scenic landscapes
To my surprise, I felt much better the next day. Most of the pain had faded, and the route—winding between two hills past vineyards, castles, and river bends—was simply spectacular. The scenery carried me all the way to Rolandswerth.

A well-deserved break & the final stretch ahead
Rest day at the right time – 400 km to go
In Rolandswerth, I gave myself a well-earned rest day. Four more riding days and about 400 kilometers lie ahead. I had originally hoped to reach Rotterdam a day early, but that’s no longer realistic. Still, I’m focused on finishing the ride—strong and satisfied.
🔭 Reflections & what’s to come
Pushing through fatigue, looking forward to the finish
The past two days were full of challenges and incredible sights. Even when it was tough, the Rhine Cycle Route continued to motivate and reward me. Now it’s time to enjoy the final stages and everything they have to offer before reaching Rotterdam.
