My Bicycle Adventure 2025

Pilgrimage by Bike

This year, I decided to start my bike journey right at my doorstep – a privilege when you live in Basel, where three EuroVelo long-distance cycling routes (EV15, EV6, and EV5) meet. After completing the Rhine Cycle Route (EV15) last year and previously riding the Atlantic–Black Sea Route (EV6) from Tuttlingen to Vienna, my path this time will take me along the Via Romea Francigena (EV5), crossing the Gotthard Pass into the south.

My goal? Rome – at the very least! Depending on how well I progress, maybe even further. This historic pilgrimage route promises not only breathtaking landscapes but also rich cultural and culinary experiences along the way. From the panoramic Alpine scenery to the sun-drenched hills of Italy, it will be a tour full of contrasts and new impressions. I'm excited to share my experiences and moments with you – stay tuned! 🚴‍♂️🌍

The Via Romea (Francigena) – A Cultural Adventure on Two Wheels

The EuroVelo 5 – Via Romea (Francigena) is a major European long-distance cycling route, rich in both historical and cultural significance. Stretching over 3,250 kilometers, it connects seven countries and follows the path of medieval pilgrims who once traveled from England to Italy. The route begins in the English city of Canterbury, passes through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Switzerland, and finally reaches the Italian port city of Brindisi.

In terms of scenery, the EuroVelo 5 offers a stunning variety of landscapes: from the gentle hills of Champagne and the majestic Alpine passes of Switzerland to the picturesque Tuscan countryside in Italy, cyclists are treated to breathtaking natural beauty. The culinary journey is just as diverse – from Belgian chocolate and French wine to Italian pasta and pizza. Thus, the EuroVelo 5 is not only a sporting challenge but also a cultural exploration, connecting cyclists with the rich history and way of life across Europe.
